notes by the taper:OK, here we are a FM broadcast of Iggy & The Stooges with James Williamson on guitar. Again, I dont get the best reception of WFMU even though Im pretty damn close to it, but it was coming in better today after some messing withthe antenna and the Beam Box, that being said, it is still a mono recording throughout most of it, stereo might have broken in at some points. Also, I heard some glitches throughout the broadcast and dropouts, they were all from WFMU's side of things, I think this show made it through pretty unscathed. Offensive words blurred out.

The ConcertLate 1979, Stevie Wonder embarked on a 6-city tour to perform his live rendition of Journey Through The Secret Life of Plants -- complete with Orchestra. Only six concerts were ever performed of this entire material. There are only two known recordings of any of these shows (both made from this same Pasadena Civic show). The other known recording was made on better equipment than mine listed above. Tragically the original taper of the "other recording" is now deceased and his family does not allow access to any of his recordings. That makes this the only known recording that has ever been released to the public of any of these shows.
During the first hour of the concert, Stevie plays the full "Secret Life of Plants" album, sans one or two songs. After a break, he comes out dressed like "Little Stevie Wonder" and plays 30 of his top-10 hits for the next two hours. There's some very notable songs in this list. Stevie plays a few unreleased songs like "Garden of Love" and "Never Let You Down." He also does a great cover of "I Can See the Sun in Late December." But the most intersting song is an unreleased version of "Rock Like You." This is the same exact song, albeit with different lyrics, as "Do Like You" that would appear on his next (Hotter Than July) album. As you listen to the song, note the totally different lyrics.

In May of 1988 Atlantic Records celebrated their 40th anniversary in New York City at Madison Square Garden. A grand mix of Atlantic artist performed ranging from the past to the (then) present. The actual concert lasted over 12 hours and portions of the concert were broadcast on HBO and simulcast on FM radio. My recording was taken from WNEW FM in New York and totals 5 1/2 hours in length. The entire show was never broadcast. Some artist’s sets were edited and some omitted entirely. The broadcast started hours after the event started so some of the performances shown were live while others were recorded earlier. To some extent the performances were not broadcast in their original running order with acts from earlier in the day inserted between the later acts and of course songs omitted to make room for them.
The HBO show and this simulcast are probably the most complete versions of the show in circulation. The HBO show has been posted here before: http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/...lantic+records. But as far as I know the simulcast has not. An edited down version of this concert was shown on ABC TV later this same year and then Atlantic Records released a video of the show which contained excerpts of the performance intermixed with archive footage of other Atlantic artists.
Quite an interesting array or artists spanning 40 years of Atlantic history. There is a section in the center of the show with various members of Booker T. & The M.G.'s featuring Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn along with Dan Akyroyd as his alter ego Elwood Blues. They are listed here as The Elwood Blues Review as dubbed so by Elwood himself. And of course the night concludes with the Led Zeppelin Reunion featuring Jason Bonham on drums. Quite a night.
There are a couple of glitches in this recording such as some static present in track 9 and a few other random spots. I don't know if that is an artifact of the broadcast or just my reception. I'm leaning towards an artifact of the broadcast. Also there is a tape flip at the end of Urgent and another at the end of People Got To Be Free with a short bit missing. Other then that the recording is complete. Enjoy!

Producer Notes:It's been a few years since the original VCD production of this title, and the 10th anniversary of this excellent concert it seems like a fitting time for this DVD release. There have been a few DVD-Rs of this show circulating in trading circles, even one borrowing the original VCD title, but this is the "official" AppleJack Studios produced version of the title.
And, although the title is the same and artwork is similarly updated from the VCD release, this is in actuality an all-new production. A different low-gen VHS copy of the in-house feed from the arena was used as the video source, generously contributed from the collection of "Gandalf". The video quality is superb, the colors are rich and full, the detail crisp, and only on a handful of occasions is the slightest hint that the video isn't a master copy. This picture looks as good on a big screen as it does on a small one, and if you have ever seen a video bootleg on big screen television, you understand what a compliment this is.
The audio is also excellent. Once again, it was sourced from the "Critical Mass" bootleg, but for this release it was nicely remastered by Rush-Signals productions and has a new fullness and bass presence that was somewhat lacking in the original bootleg audio. Collectors of other versions of this show will recall that there are 40-odd seconds missing from YYZ on the video feed; for this release, the audio was retained intact and a short slide show of stills is presented during this portion of the concert.
Thanks and credits go to Gandalf for donating the video source, to leegeddy for facilitating the donation, to Dave at Rush-Signals Productions for the fine audio remastering, and to Duley for another stellar job on the DVD cover and menu artwork. Please trade this production freely, it was made by fans for fans, and is never to be bought or sold.
